It is nine o’clock at night. The house is finally quiet. And you are standing in front of the open refrigerator with no real memory of walking there.
You did everything right all day. And now you are eating crackers over the sink.
The diet industry has exactly one explanation for that moment, and it has been selling it to women for fifty years.ย You have a willpower problem.
They Sell a Whole Aisle of Products Based on That One Sentence
Appetite suppressant lollipops. Nighttime fat burners. Teas that promise to shut down evening cravings. Hundred calorie packs so you can have “just one.” The rule that says the kitchen closes at seven. The trick that says brush your teeth so food tastes bad. An app that buzzes at eight to tell you that you have used up your points for the day.
These products are marketed to women who have been told the problem is them.
So let us look at what actually happened in your day.
Coffee for breakfast. A salad at noon you were proud of. Nothing at all between two and six because you were being good. Six hours of sleep, maybe five. Decisions from the second your feet hit the floor, most of them made for other people.
By nine o’clock your body is not misbehaving. It is asking for what it never got.
Starving yourself all day is what caused the binge.
Eating almost nothing all afternoon is why you are at the refrigerator at nine. Then they sell you something for the nine o’clock and never once admit that their own plan is why you are standing there.
Five Real Reasons You Reach for Food After Eight
1. You under-ate all day.ย The afternoon you were most proud of is the one your body is making up for at night. That is not a moral failure. That is math.
2. You are short on sleep.ย When you do not sleep enough, you wake up hungrier and it takes longer to feel full. That is your hormones, not your discipline. One short night can have you eating more the next day without you ever noticing why.
3. Your blood sugar fell.ย When your afternoon runs on carbohydrates and nothing else, your blood sugar climbs and then drops, and when it drops you go looking for food. Eating protein at two o’clock changes how nine o’clock feels.
4. You are out of decisions.ย Your brain has been choosing for fifteen hours by then, and the part of your brain that says no is worn out. Evening is when everybody’s judgment is thinnest. That is not unique to you and it is not a character issue.
5. Nine o’clock is the only hour that belongs to you.ย No supplement on earth will ever touch this one. It is the only stretch of the day when nobody wants anything from you. If food is the only thing you get that is entirely yours, of course you go looking for it.
The Swap
Try This Instead
Stop judging the night. Audit the day.
Before bed tonight, ask one question instead of listing everything you ate wrong:
“Did I take care of my energy today?”
Sleep. Food. Water. Ten quiet minutes. Name the one you skipped, and give it to yourself tomorrow, on purpose, in daylight. What happens at nine o’clock starts at noon.
This Reminds Me of a Scripture
This reminds me of a scripture in Psalm 127. Solomon was writing about builders and watchmen. Men who got up early and stayed up late, working themselves into the ground, sure that if they stopped for one second everything would fall apart. He tells them they are wearing themselves out for nothing, and then he says this:
“For he grants sleep to those he loves.”
Psalm 127:2
He was not writing about food. He was writing about striving. And what is true of anxious work is true of anxious eating. Some of what you are reaching for at nine o’clock is rest, and rest was never something you had to earn.
You do not need more willpower at nine o’clock. You need more of your life back at two o’clock.
Where Are You Actually Stuck?
