The Prayer I Keep Forgetting to Pray
· by Cathy Morenzie
Can I be honest with you? I’ll pray about almost anything — my schedule, my kids, a hard decision at work, even a parking spot. But when it comes to what’s happening in my kitchen at 9 p.m., I somehow forget prayer is even on the table.
It’s funny, isn’t it? We bring God into our finances, our marriages, our biggest decisions — and then we get to food, and suddenly we think we’re supposed to handle that one on our own. White-knuckle it. Muscle through it. Like our cravings are somehow outside His jurisdiction.
Here’s the truth, though: most of us already know what to do. Eat better. Move more. Drink more water. You don’t need another tip — you’ve read the books, downloaded the plans, memorized the rules. And yet you’re still stuck in that same start-stop cycle, promising yourself Monday will be different.
So let me ask you something we don’t ask enough: what if the problem was never the food?
What if the cookies, the second helping, the mindless snacking in front of the fridge aren’t really about food at all — but about something underneath it? A fear you haven’t named. A stress you haven’t released. An emptiness you’ve been trying to fill with whatever’s within arm’s reach.
The problem isn’t the food — it’s what’s going on underneath it.
Here’s what I want you to try, next time a craving hits, before you reach for anything: slow down for ten seconds and ask God one honest question. “Lord, what am I really trying to stuff down right now?” Don’t rush past it. Sit with it. Let Him answer.
Because when you invite Him into that moment instead of muscling through it alone, something shifts. He starts showing you what’s really going on — the fear, the stress, the ache you’ve been feeding instead of facing.
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.”
Psalm 139:23–24
That’s not a scary prayer. It’s an invitation to freedom. When you let God search that deep, you’re not signing up for more shame — you’re finally letting someone bigger than you handle what you were never meant to carry alone.
This isn’t about trying harder. You’ve already tried harder, probably for years. It’s about going deeper. And deeper is exactly where God has been waiting for you the whole time.
This Week’s Challenge
The next time a craving pulls at you, pause before you give in or fight it. Ask God the question: “What am I really trying to stuff down?” Then write down whatever comes to mind — even if it surprises you. Just once this week. One craving, one honest prayer. That’s where the shift starts.
You don’t have to figure this out on your own, and you definitely don’t have to white-knuckle your way through the next craving. Ask Him. He’s already waiting.
