It’s Not a Knowledge Problem
Recently when I was coaching a client on the phone, she asked me the age-old question, “What’s the best diet that I should be following?”
I don’t have a problem answering this question, but I do realize that knowing the best diet is not usually helpful. It’s not a knowledge problem. In fact, it’s probably the opposite. We have so much knowledge and information at our fingertips that instead of it helping us, it actually overwhelms us.
Start with Healthy Boundaries
I’m just as guilty myself of “wasting” time on Pinterest looking for more low-carb, healthy meals. Yet, if I’m really honest with myself, I don’t need more recipes. What I really need is to maintain the healthy boundaries I set for myself—minimal junk food; no eating after 7:00 PM; drinking lots of water, to name just another few.
If we’re really honest with ourselves, we’re not doing the simple things we know to do, so why do we believe that we will stick to a new plan if we can’t even follow basic practices?
We have more information than we can ever remember, consume, and implement, yet we continue to search out more information. We always have a feeling like maybe the key to our issue is in the next book or program so the journey continues.
Most of the time, the information we’ve been praying for is right in front of our faces. We miss it because of what I call the “curse of knowledge.” Like Adam and Eve in the garden, they had everything they could ever possibly want, yet they wanted more. The enemy knows that the search for more knowledge can be a trap that leads us down a never-ending rabbit hole.
Emotional Problems Need Spiritual Solutions
We don’t have a knowledge problem, we an emotional problem, and all emotional problems need spiritual solutions. This is why all my books and programs help you confront what is really at the root instead of just telling you what to eat and what exercise to do FIRST.
When you take time and ask yourself that question, you’ll find that all roads lead back to your heart.
Instead of searching out new diets, ask yourself, the following simple questions:
1. Are You Applying What You Already Know?
One of the five guiding principles of the Weight Loss, God’s Way Program is, “information without revelation will not lead to transformation.” It’s one thing to read something in the Bible, or in another book, but without relying on the power of the Holy Spirit to transform us, it’s just more information that has no power on its own. Remember this: “Knowledge is NOT power; application of knowledge is power.”
“Information without revelation will not lead to transformation.”
“Knowledge is NOT power; application of knowledge is power.”
2. Have You Mastered It?
Starting any program is fairly easy because we’re excited when we start, but mastery is quite another challenge. Continue to do what you know to do until it becomes a habit. Until then, don’t quit, don’t get frustrated or overwhelmed, and don’t say it’s not working because it’s taking longer than you expected. Take it one day at a time and you will get there.
3. Have You Gone Deeper?
If you’re committed to a goal and you’re not seeing results, there’s still more to learn, more to understand, and more to surrender and release to God. Move past surface-level healing and understand what is at the root of why you do what you do. Remember, losing weight is an emotional issue that requires a spiritual solution. Have you sought the Lord to understand what is at the root?
If not, ask Him. Study Psalm 139:23-24:
Search me, God, and know my heart;
test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting. NIV
