Eat a Snack Before You Go? But It Was Never About Hunger.

Eat a snack before you go? You've tried it a hundred times. It was never about hunger.

Hey friend,

The last few Wednesdays we have been naming the diet culture lies we have believed. Last week it was the rules that sabotage you at restaurants. This week I want to go after the advice that shows up before you even walk in the door. Not the restaurant door this time. The door of a party, a shower, a family gathering, any room where the food table is the main event.

You have probably tried this one before. I have probably even talked about it before, if I am being honest.

Eat a healthy snack before the party. Some almonds. A protein shake. A hard-boiled egg. Something to take the edge off, so you are not starving when you walk in.

I get it. It makes sense. If you do not go in hungry, you will not overeat. That is the whole logic, and it sounds reasonable.

But the problem is that hunger is rarely the reason we overeat.

Here is what is actually going on, most of the time:

😰 You are anxious about being in a room full of people.

A party is a room of eyes, small talk, and unpredictable conversation. For many of us, that is genuinely stressful, even when we love the people in the room. Food becomes something to do with your hands, and something predictable in a room full of things you cannot control.

🍪 There is food in front of you that you have told yourself all week you cannot have.

If you have spent the week restricting, the sight of the dessert table is not really about the dessert. It is about the whole week of telling your body no. The body remembers every no, and it collects the debt eventually, usually all at once, and usually at the table with the best food in the room.

😮‍💨 You have finally exhaled after a long week, and food is how you exhale.

For a lot of us, food was the very first way we ever learned to comfort ourselves, long before we had words for what we were feeling. That habit does not disappear just because we grew up. A party is often the first quiet, permission-giving moment in a busy week, and the plate quietly becomes part of the exhale.

🗣️ Someone brings up something you did not want to talk about, and food is the one thing that will not talk back.

It could be a comment about your weight or your plate. It could be a question from a family member about your job, your marriage, or your kids. It could be an opinion someone offers about a decision you have already made. Whatever it is, it can send you straight to the food table without you ever deciding to go. Food does not judge you, argue with you, or ask a follow-up question. In a hard moment, that silence can feel like relief.

🎁 It is free, and something in you refuses to pass that up.

This one has nothing to do with feelings and everything to do with value. Researchers call it the zero price effect: humans are wired to overvalue anything free, completely apart from whether we actually want it. At a party, that shows up as “I paid for this ticket” or “it would be wasteful not to,” and suddenly your fullness signals are competing with a bargain your brain does not want to miss.

🍎 You are genuinely, physically hungry.

This one is real, and it happens. If dinner will not be served for hours and you know your body needs fuel, eating something beforehand is wise stewardship, not a trick. The difference is that this is the only one of the six that a snack can actually solve.

And no amount of almonds eaten beforehand is going to touch any of the other five.

This is why the snack is bad advice for most of what is actually happening. It treats a heart problem like a stomach problem, and then you blame yourself when it does not work. It is not a discipline problem. It is a diagnosis problem. Somebody told you the wrong thing was wrong.

Now let me be fair here. Eating a small meal before you go is not wrong in itself. If you know you have a blood sugar issue, or dinner will not be served for four hours, some protein beforehand is smart planning. Keep it.

But do not tell yourself that snack is going to keep you from overeating later. If it happens anyway, it was never about your stomach. It was about your heart.

A Word on Grace.

Please do not read this list and walk away ashamed. None of these six reasons make you weak or broken. They make you human, and they make you someone who has been carrying more than food was ever meant to carry. Naming the real reason is not an accusation. It is the first act of compassion you can offer yourself at that table.

Instead of the Snack, Try This.

If you are truly hungry before you go, eat something real beforehand. That part is easy, and it is good stewardship of your body. But if you catch yourself reaching for a snack out of habit and not hunger, try this instead. Before you walk in, take one quiet minute, on the porch or in the bathroom once you arrive. Ask yourself:

What am I actually feeling right now?

Tired? Anxious about who will be there? Dreading a conversation? Lonely? Finally getting a break and wanting to feel something?

Just name it. You do not have to fix it. Naming it is the whole exercise, because the thing you can name loses its grip on you at the buffet table.

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Romans 12:2

This is what that renewing looks like in real time. Not a rule about food. A moment of honesty about what the food was actually being asked to do.

If you keep eating in ways you do not want to, look at what’s behind it.
